Chapter One
The moment U.S. marshal Michael Jameson stepped into the small town of Haven in Oregon, he felt that something was wrong. He was there, investigating the disappearance of 8 year old Michelle Johnson. Abducted less than two days ago, the van was tracked to a rest stop less than half a mile from here. He came here looking for any insight into the case from the locals. The main reason he felt something was not right, however, was the fact he had never even heard of Haven. One minute, it doesn’t exist, the next it has an entire Facebook page dedicated to saving its trees, he thought irritatingly. He walked down it deserted main street when he saw a flickering OPEN sign in the local diner. As he entered the door, he noticed that only the cashier/server was in. “Howdy,” he said, “Have you seen anything suspicious happen here in the last few days?” “Can’t say I have, darling”, she said with an obvious intent to flirt, “but then again, everyone here has their secrets.” “Yeah, well, I’m part of a search-and-rescue for a Michelle Johnson. Here’s my card and her picture if you need it,” he said and reached the door when the lady said something that unnerved him completely. “How did you get my baby picture?” To be continued….
